Sunday 4th June to Monday 12th June 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Sunday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A Hobby was at Porth Hellick and a Lesser Redpoll was at Shooters’ Pool, Lower Moors.

Bryher – A Hooded Crow.

At sea – A Sooty Shearwater, 40+ European Storm-petrels and a Great Skua were seen on the evening short-range pelagic trip.

There were no reports on Monday or Tuesday.

Wednesday’s birds were:

At sea – A Balearic Shearwater and 2 European Storm-petrels were seen from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Thursday’s birds were:

St. Agnes – A Hobby.

Tresco – 2 Common Pochards and a Common Swift.

St. Martin’s – A Raven. (more…)

Tuesday 30th May to Saturday 3rd June 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Tuesday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The 2 Night Herons were still at Porth Hellick.

St. Martin’s – A first-summer male Red-footed Falcon was seen at Bread and Cheese Cove, near the Daymark.

Tresco – 3 Common Pochards, a Common Buzzard and 4 Swift.

Wednesday’s bird, the only report was from

St. Mary’s – A Hobby was seen at Porth Hellick.

Thursday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The 2 Night Herons were seen in Holy Vale at 06:50.

Tresco – A Grey Plover, 2 Dunlin’s, 5 Whimbrels and a White Wagtail.

Annet – 280+ Manx Shearwaters were seen offshore.

At sea – 20+ European Storm-petrels and 2 Great Skuas were seen on the evening short-range pelagic trip. (more…)

Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th May 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Thursday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The female Little Bittern was still on the pool at Lower Moors and the Night Heron flew from the reeds at 21:20. A Whinchat was on Peninnis, a Hooded Crow was on the Golf Course, an Osprey was seen from MacFarland’s Down and a Hobby was over Porth Hellick.

Bryher – A Golden Oriole, a magnificent full summer Grey Plover, a Whinchat, 12 Spotted Flycatchers and 14 Common Whitethroats.

St. Martin’s – A Golden Plover, a Hobby and probably the same Osprey that was seen from MacFarland’s Down.

Tresco – A Common Buzzard.

Inter-island waters – A Great Northern Diver was seen from the Scillonian III off the Eastern Isles. Another 15 Great Northern Divers, 5 Common Terns and 450+ Manx Shearwaters were seen on the ‘Shearwater Special’ trip in the evening. (more…)

Monday 8th to Wednesday 10th May 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Great Northern Divers,The Roads, (Joe Pender)

Sunday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The Little Bittern was still in Lower Moors and the Night Heron was seen there in the, flying from Shooters’ Pool towards the Dump Clump. The Western Bonelli’s Warbler was still in the hedge that runs from the Standing Stones Field to the field opposite Nowhere. A Dotterel was still on the Golf Course, a Merlin flew over Hugh Town harbour and a Grasshopper Warbler was trapped and ringed at Porth Hellick. A Golden Oriole was near Porthloo chalets and 11 Common Swifts were over Lower Moors in the evening.

St. Agnes – 4 Dunlins, 2 Turtle Doves, 2 Common Swifts, a Richard’s Pipit, a Ring Ouzel, a late Redwing, 3 Spotted Flycatchers, a Common Redstart, 6 Common Whitethroats and a Siberian Chiffchaff.

Bryher – A Grey Plover, a Nightingale was singing early morning and a Great White Egret flew south at 16:00.

Gugh – A Whinchat.

Tresco – 2 Grey Plovers and 9 Dunlins.

Teän – A Bar-tailed Godwit.

Inter-island Waters – 14 Great Northern Divers were in The Roads (more…)
