St Mary’s – Cuckoo at Porth Hellick Downs and Common Scoter (7) still in The Roads Tresco – Swift (4), Blackcap and Sanderling today Bryher – Bar-tailed Godwit on island today
St Mary’s – Common Scoter (7) again in The Roads. Tresco – Common Swift and Sanderling (14) were the only birds of note today St Agnes – Dunlin (2) and Turnstone (30) Western Rocks – European storm Petrel and Turnstone (6)
What turned out to be one of the best Mays on record for the islands started off relatively slowly with just a Grasshopper Warbler and Cuckoo of note at Porth Hellick on the 1st. Things started to pick up the next day however when a Shorelark was found on Tresco. This was only the 11th record of this species on the islands and it was not seen again after the 2nd. (more…)
St Mary’s – Golden Oriole singing at entrance to church at Old Town. Also Quail on The Garrison and Common Scoter (7) between St Mary’s and Samson. Scilly Pelagics – Pom Skua 7mls south of St Mary’s from this evenings Pelagic. Also Storm Petrel (70+)
St Mary’s – *LITTLE BITTERN* (male) at Lower Moors from ISBG Hide at 14.18hrs and showing well (bird appears to have a damaged wing). Quail flushed from road to Penninis Head at 13.40hrs. Tresco – Golden Oriole at Rowesfields at 12.05hrs.
St Mary’s – Honey Buzzard (fem) flew over Porthloo towards The Garrison at 15.35hrs. Little-ringed Plover still at Porth Hellick Pool from seaward hide at 21.10hrs. St Agnes – **BLACK-EARED WHEATEAR** (singing male possibly of eastern black-throated morph) at Little Porth Askin still this morning and showing well. This is the first in Britain since 2002 and only the 6th Scilly record. The last one on Scilly was also of the eastern race and was on Tresco Read more…
St Agnes – **BLACK-EARED WHEATEAR** (male) at Little Porth Askin this afternoon and evening. Also RED BACKED SHRIKE (fem) at end of Barnaby Lane.
St Mary’s – RED-BACKED SHRIKE (fem) on Penninis Head, 350yrds past Peninnis Farm in dead tree mid-afternoon Bryher – Spotted Flycatcher and Tree Pipit on island today. Tresco – Lesser Redpoll (2), Marsh Harrier and Common Buzzard today.
