Friday 10th to Monday 13th November 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Friday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A second-winter Iceland Gull was commuting between Porthloo, Porth Mellon and the Dump. Another Iceland Gull (a first-winter) & a Black Redstart were at Little Porth and the Water Pipit was still on Porth Hellick Beach.

Saturday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The second-winter Iceland Gull was seen at Porthloo & on town Beach and the first-winter Iceland Gull & the Black Redstart were still at Little Porth. A Siberian Chiffchaff & a Bullfinch were at Porth Hellick and the Water Pipit was still on the beach there. A Firecrest & a Siberian Chiffchaff were in Lower Moors and 2 Yellow-browed Warblers were at Newford Duck Pond. (more…)

Saturday 4th to Thursday 9th November 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Saturday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s –The Water Pipit was still on Porth Hellick Beach and 2 Reed Buntings were in the dead grass behind the boatshed there. 5 Yellow-browed Warblers were at higher Moors between Holy Vale and Carn Friars Road. 2 Yellow-browed Warblers & a Siberian Chiffchaff were in Lower Moors and 3 Yellow-browed Warblers & a Siberian Chiffchaff were at Newford Duck Pond. A Hawfinch was on a garden feeder in Church Road, Hugh Town

Sunday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – A Merlin, 5 Black Redstarts and a Snow Bunting were at Little Porth. A Brambling was in a garden at Holy Vale, the Water Pipit was still on Porth Hellick Beach and a Yellow-browed Warbler was on Porth Hellick Loop trail. (more…)

Wednesday 1st to Friday 3rd November 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Wednesday’s birds were:

St. Mary’s – The Radde’s Warbler was still at Borough Farm and 7 Hawfinches & 2 Bullfinches flew over there. A Hawfinch & a Firecrest were at Sunnyside Farm, a Black Redstart was on Holgate’s Green, a Yellow-browed Warbler & a Firecrest were in Carreg Dhu Gardens and a Yellow-browed Warbler was at Porth Hellick ringing station. The Water Pipit was still on Porth Hellick Beach and a Yellow-browed Warbler was in Lower Moors. 3 Yellow-browed Warblers & a Bullfinch were at higher Moors and 4 Yellow-browed Warblers & 2 Firecrests were on Porth Hellick Loop Trail. 25 Bramblings were in a field at the bottom of Pelistry Lane and 2 Great Northern Divers were off Watermill. There were 2 Firecrests on the Garrison & a Hawfinch flew over and a Black Redstart & a Yellow-browed Warbler were at Content.

St. Agnes – 2 Yellow-browed Warblers, a Garden Warbler and a Bullfinch. (more…)

Saturday 28th October 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Wilson’s Snipe – The candidate under discussion was at Porth Hellick Pool.

Siberian Oystercatcher – Another bird under discussion, it was reported from Porth Mellon.

Surf Scoter – Still present off New Grimsby, Tresco.

Little Bunting – 1 at Trewince and it or another at Normandy.

Richard’s Pipit – 1 at Popplestone Bay, Bryher.

Red-breasted Flycatcher – 2 in Rosehill Memorial Gardens, 1 near Spero’s Restaurant, Porth Mellon and 1 at Porthloo Lane/Telegraph junction.

Yellow-browed Warbler – 5 in Lower Moors, 3 on Porthloo Lane, 1 on Tresco and 1 caught and ringed at Porth Hellick

Hawfinch – 3 at Porthloo Lane/Telegraph junction and 1 Lower Moors.

Friday 27th October 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

A selection from Friday’s log, the last one of the Scilly Season:

Surf Scoter – Yesterday’s bird was in Porth Mellon at 08:30 it then flew out to sea and was relocated between Bryher and Tresco.

Surf Scoter, S.Brayshaw

Red-throated Pipit – 1 flew from Star Castle towards Newman Pottery.

Dusky Warbler – 2 still in Lower Moors and 1 on Gugh.

American Golden Plover – 1 in the Telegraph/High Lanes area.

Thursday 26th October 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

A selection from Thursday’s log:

Grey-cheeked Thrush – 1 was found on St. Martin’s, unfortunately it disappeared and was only seen by the 2 original finders.

Surf Scoter – 1 was at Porthloo it then flew out to sea and was relocated in the Roads, paying a brief  visit to Porthcressa Bay

Dusky Warbler – 1 still in Lower Moors.

Little Bunting – 1 still on St. Agnes, 1 at Pelistry and it or another at Kittydown.

Melodious Warbler – 1 at the Sandy Lane end of Holy Vale.

Common Rosefinch – 1 on St. Agnes.

Bluethroat – 1 on Bryher.

Water Pipit – 1 still on Porth Hellick Beach.

Spoonbill – 2 on Samson.

Hawfinch –  8 on St. Mary’s, 1 on Bryher, 4 on St. Agnes and 4 on St. Martin’s.

Lapland Bunting – 1 on St. Agnes.

Tuesday 24th October 2017 IoS Bird Sightings

Dusky Warbler – 2 still in Lower Moors.

Little Bunting – 1, possibly 2 on St. Agnes.

Hawfinch –  2 Carreg Dhu Gardens, 1 Telegraph, 1 Green Lane, 2 St. Agnes, 1 Tresco and 1 St. Martin’s

Yellow-browed Warbler – 7 on St. Mary’s, 2 on Tresco and 1 on St. Agnes.

Water Pipit – 1 again on Porth Hellick Beach.

Firecrest – 13 on St. Mary’s and 4 on Tresco.
