St. Mary’s – A very cold day but warmer than the mainland, with consequent cold weather movement. There were 30 Golden Plovers and 22 Lapwings on the airfield, there were other small flocks of Lapwing and Golden Plovers around the island as well as Redwings, Fieldfares. Chaffinches and Meadow Pipits flying over in numbers. The Water Pipit & a Black Redstart were still on the beach below the quay car park and 25 unidentified “grey geese flew over high heading towards Peninnis. A female Goldeneye ( a scarce bird on Scilly, less than annual) was in Porthloo with a female Red-breasted Merganser and the Spoonbill flew from Porth Mellon towards Old Town. A Pallas’s Warbler was seen and videoed on Porth Hellick Loop trail, unfortunately it was only seen by the finder and could not be relocated, by way of compensation there were 2 Firecrests and a Siberian Chiffchaff on the trail and a Crossbill flew over. 2+ Siberian chiffchaff, a Little Grebe & 10 Common Teal were at Porth Hellick and 22 Common snipe were flushed from a boggy field on Carn Friars farm. A Yellow-browed Warbler. 2 Siberian Chiffchaffs and a Firecrest were in Lower Moors.
