Late News from Friday (29/09)
Photographs of a large skua were examined and as suspected at the time, it proved to be a SOUTH POLAR SKUA. This the third record from Scilly Pelagics this year,
A visitor photogaphed a bird from the Stephen Sussex hide at Porth Hellick, proved to be a BOBOLNK.
Saturday (30/09)
BOBOLINK – 2!! together in the Pittisporum Hedge west of the Mailand Marketing shed west of the airport (photo).
Red-eyed Vireo – 1 still on Barnaby Lane. St. Agnes.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper – 1 still on Wingletang Down, St. Agnes.
Glossy Ibis – 1 seen again at various locations around St. Mary’s (photo).
Little Stint – 1 on Beady Pool, St. Agnes.
Pink-footed Goose – 1 still in a field at Normandy.
Common Rosefinch – 1 in the same area as the Bobolinks
Wryneck – 1 in garden below Buzza Hill which then flew towards the Peninnis Allotments and 1 on the road between Borough Farm & Maypole.
Osprey – 1 early afternoon over Higher Town Bay, St. Martin’s and probably the same bird over Porth Hellick Pool, early evening,
Common Swift – 1 over Hugh Town.
Firecrest – 2 Carreg Dhu and 1 in the Borough Farm/Maypole area.
Cetti’s Warbler – 1 singing at Higher Moors.
Lesser Whitethroat – A bird thought to be one of the eastern races (Blythi?) was in the sallows bordering the field at Longstone Lodge,
Whinchat – 1 at Parting Carn Farm and 1 on St.Martin’s.
Pied Flycatcher – 4 on St. Mary’s and 1 on St.Martin’s.
Spotted Flycatcher – 1 in the Borough Farm/Maypole area and 3 on St. Martin’s.
Grey Wagtail – 2 on St. Martin’s.
Crossbill – 20 between Lower Town & Middle Town, St. Martin’s, c20 flew over Appletree Glade, Bryher, c40 over Salakee and 1 flew east over Maypole.
Sunday (01/10)
BOBOLINK – Unbelievably it would seem there were now 3! birds around Mainland Marketing shed below the airport. 2 were being watched in a hedge (photos) when another flew over calling.
Red-eyed Vireo – 1 still on Barnaby Lane. St. Agnes.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper –1 still on the eastern side of Wingletang Down, St. Agnes.
Glossy Ibis – 1 still around St. Mary’s before settling in a field on Salakee Farm.
Short-toed Lark – 1 still in the big field at Castella, St. Agnes.
Common Rosefinch – 2 together in a field behind the Mainland Marketing shed (photo) and on the footpath from Porth Hellick to Csrn Friars Farm.
Wryneck – 2 between Maypole and Borough Farm, St. Mary’s, 1 Porth Hellick Down and 1 on the western side of Peninnis.
Osprey – 1 over the Eastern Isles and then moving around St. Mary’s.
Cory’s Shearwater – 100+ past Peninnis between 08:00 & 08:30 and 6 off Horse Point, St. Agnes between 08:50 & 09:40.t.
Great Shearwater – 10 past Peninnis between 08:00 & 08:30 and 1 off Horse Point, St. Agnes.
Sooty Shearwater – 5 past Peninnis between 08:00 & 08:30.
Manx Shearwater – 5 past Peninnis between 08:00 & 08:30.
Sabine’s Gull – A juvenile off Horse Point, St. Agnes.
Little Gull – a first-winter bird off Horse Point, St. Agnes.
Great Skua – 1 past Peninnis.
Little Stint – 1 still on Beady Pool, St. Agnes.
Common Sandpiper – 1 still at Pewndrathen.
Pink-footed Goose – 1 still in a field at Normandy.
Pintail – An immature on Porth Helli.ck Pool.
Skylark – 2 on the airfield.
Firecrest – 1 still at Carreg Dhu, 1 in Holy Vale and 1 between Maypole and Borough Farm, St. Mary’s.
Lesser Whitethroat – 1 at the bottom of Watermill and 1 on Bryher.
Common Whitethroat – 1 near the St. Martin’s Post Office.
Grasshopper Warbler – 1 in a field opposite Bourdeaux Pottery.
Whinchat – 1 in a field opposite Bourdeaux Pottery, 1 near the Health Cantre and “several” on Bryher.
Common Redstart – A male in fields above Perpitch, St. Martin’s.
Pied Flycatcher – 3 on St. Mary’s and 2 on St.Agnes.
Spotted Flycatcher – 1 on St. Mary’s, 1 on St.Agnes and 2 on Bryher.
Yellow Wagtail – 2 at Pelistry Riding Stables.
Siskin – 5 over Longstone Bungalow.
Monday (02/10)
Red-eyed Vireo – 1 by the bub dump on St. Agnes and then flew towards Browarth Fields.
Buff-breasted Sandpiper –1 still on the eastern side of Wingletang Down, St. Agnes.
Short-toed Lark –1still in the big field at Castella, St. Agnes.
Common Rosefinch – Still 2 in a field behind the Mainland Marketing shed.
Glossy Ibis – 1 at Porth Hellick flew off towards Holy Vale and landed in a field behind Parting Carn.
Wryneck – 1 between Maypole and Borough Farm, St. Mary’s and 1 on the west side of Peninnis.
Pink-footed Goose – 1 still in a field at Normandy.
Little Stint – 1 still on Beady Pool, St. Agnes.
Whimbrel – 3 on Wingletang Down, St. Agnes.
Marsh Harrier – A female drifted across Porth Hellick Loop and appeared to land in the reeds at the seaward end of the pool.
Kingfisher – 1 originally ringed on the mainland was retrapped.
Skylark – 1 on Wingletang Down, St. Agnes.
Firecrest – 2 Firecrest at Carreg Dhu, 1 near Rocky Hill Studio and 1 in the elms on the entrance track to Old Town Church.
Cetti’s Warbler – 1 trapped and ringed in 2020 was retrapped at Porth Hellick Ringing Station.
Yellow-browed Warbler – 1 in a garden near the Coastguards, St. Agnes.
Mistle Thrush – 1 at Middle Town, St. Martin’s.
Common Redstart – A female at Porthloo Boatpark.
Whinchat – 2 on St. Mary’s and 1 on St. Agnes.
Pied Flycatcher – 1 on St. Agnes.
Spotted Flycatcher – 3 on St. Mary’s.
Tree Pipit – 1 on Peninnis.
Redpoll – 1 flew over Peninnis.
Siskin – 1 heard over Carreg Dhu.
