Monday (15/04)

Pallid Swift – Yesterday’s bird was hawking over the Deep Point area.

Purple Heron –1 was flushed from Lower Moors Pool and flew towards Shooters’ Pool, where it seemed to drop in.

Ring-necked Duck – The adult male was still on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Woodchat Shrike – 1 on the airfield, on gorse between runways,

Hoopoe – 1 in vineyard on St. Martin’s.

Golden Oriole – 1 on the track from Longstone to Holy Vale and 2 behind the cricket field on St. Martin’s.

Pink-footed Goose – 2 near the church on Tresco.

Great Northern Diver – 2 off the Old Quay in St. Mary’s Harbour.

Cuckoo – 1 between Holy Vale and Port Hellick House.

Jackdaw – 1 flew over Telegraph.

Siberian Chiffchaff – 1 by the screen at Shooters’ Pool, Lower Moors.

Spotted Flycatcher – The first report of the year was of 1 in willows near the seaward end of .the Porth Hellick boardwalk.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 in the small quarry below Porth Hellick House.

Tuesday (17/04)

Ring-necked Duck – The drake was still on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Pochard – 2 on Abbey Pool, Tresco.

Purple Heron – 1 flew west over Hugh Town. 

Little Egret – 1 on Tresco.

Great Northern Diver – 1 in Porth Mellon.

Wood Sandpiper – 1 on the Project Pool between Lower Moors and the Dump (photo).

Purple Sandpiper – c20 at Horse Point, St. Agnes.

Hoopoe – 1 still in on St, Martin’s flew from the vineyard towards Little Arthur Farm.

Siberian Chiffchaff – 1 Still by Shooters’ Pool, St. Agnes.

Mediterranean/Spotted Flycatcher – The bird was still in the willows near the seaward end of the Porth Hellick boardwalk. It was thought by some observers to show characteristics of Mediterranean Flycatcher .

Wednesday (17/04)

Spotted/Mediterranean Flycatcher – After forensic examination, the flycatcher at Porth Hellick is now thought by some to be the Balearic race of Mediterranean Flycatcher (photo). 2 poo samples have been obtained and it is hoped that DNA analysis will confirm its identification. If it proves to be a Mediterranean it will be the first British record. It was relocated in the Salakee Farm fields in the evening,

Purple Heron – 1 seen at Lower Moors and the Porth Hellick.

Woodchat Shrike – 1 in gorse un the airfield.

Serin – 1 flew past the Salakee pines towards Porth Hellick.

Golden Oriole – 2 on Porth Hellick Loop.

Pink-footed Goose – 2 near the church on Tresco.

Great Northern Diver – 1 in Hugh Town Harbour.

Wood Sandpiper – 3 on the flood by the church on Tresco.

Whimbrel – 13flew over Hugh Town harbour.

Cuckoo – 1 singing in the pines on Middle Down, Tresco.

Jackdaw – 1 in a garden at Telegraph.

Siberian Chiffchaff – 1 still by the screen at Shooter’s Pool, Lower Moors.

Pied Flycatcher – 1 in the roadside hedge below Porth Hellick House and 1 in a garden off Garison Lane.

Thursday (18/04)

Spotted/Mediterranean Flycatcher – The “flycatcher” was seen briefly in the evening in pines on Salakee Farm, it then flew towards Porth Hellick.

Purple Heron – 1 in Lower Moors and it or another flew west over Bryher.

Common Crane – 1 high in thermals over St. Martin’s. It was then seen on Bryher before fling towards Tresco.

Hen Harrier – A ringtail was near the church on Tresco.

European Storm-petrel – 1 seen in Scilly waters from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Manx Shearwater – 31 seen in Scilly waters from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s.

Wood Sandpiper – 1 still on the flood by the church on Tresco.

Whimbrel – 10 flew north over Porth Cressa,

Rook – 1 flew over the airfield, this is another scarce Corvid on Scilly.

Golden Oriole – 1 in the garden at Longstone Cottage, 1 in Lower Moors, 1 in elms west of Porthloo Duck Pond and 2 in the pine belt behind Carreg Dhu Gardens,

Grasshopper Warbler – 1 singing in the garden at Longstone Cottage.

Sedge Warbler – The first report of the year came from Lower Moors.

Risso’s Dolphin – 1 showed very well in Scilly waters from the Scillonian III on the morning crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s

.

Friday (19/04)

Woodchat Shrike – 1 still in gorse between the runways on the airfield.

Purple Heron – 1 on Lunnon Farm and 1 flew in off the sea and over Porth Hellick Pool.

Golden Oriole – 1 at Middle Town, St. Martin’s, 1 in a garden at Longstone.

Hen Harrier – 1 at Brandy Point, St. Martin’s. 

Great Northern Diver – 1 Porth Mellon.

Black-tailed Godwit –1 on Bryher Pool.

Whimbrel – 15 on Bryher.

Common Sandpiper – 1 at Horse Point, St. Agnes.

Short-eared Owl – 1 on St. Martin’s.

Merlin – 2 on Bryher.

Ring Ouzel – A male and female on Gugh,

Saturday (20/04)

Purple Heron –1 on a path east of Pool Road, Tresco and 1 on Shooters’ Pool, Lower Moors.

Woodchat Shrike – 1 still in the gorse strip between the runways on the airfield.

Quail – 1 singing late evening near Longstone.

Golden Oriole – A male on Porth Hellick Loop Trail and 2 at Carreg Dhu.

Marsh Harrier – A cream-crowned bird on St. Agnes and later seen over the Great Pool, Tresco.

Great Northern Diver – 1 Porth Killier, St. Agnes.

Whimbrel – 2 on St. Agnes.

Cuckoo – 1 at Cove Vean, St. Agnes and 1 at Middle Town, St. Martin’s.

Hooded Crow – 1 flew south over Porth Hellick Down

Lesser Whitethroat – 1, the first of the year, was on St. Agnes.

Grasshopper Warbler – 1 reeling on the hillside behind the New Inn, Tresco.

.Ring Ouzel – 1 on Castle Down, Tresco., 1 on Porth Hellick Down and 1 at Trewince.

Lesser Redpoll – 1 north of Higher Town Bay, St. Martin’s

Sunday (21/04)

10 species of raptor were seen on the islands today: Red-footed FalconHobbyMerlinPeregrineKestrelHen HarrierMarsh HarrierCommon BuzzardRed Kite and Sparrowhawk.

Red-footed Falcon – A male was flushed off a stump near the Woolpack accommodation block.

Richard’s Pipit – 1 was on Bryher. 

Red Kite – A small influx of 10+ birds across the islands,

Purple Heron – 1 spent all day in the field adjacent to Rosehill Memorial Gardens (photo) and another flew over L:ower Moors.

Woodchat Shrike – 1 still in gorse between the runways on the airfield and 1 between Carn Near and the Heliport on Tresco.

Hen Harrier – 1 flew over Shooters’ Pool. Lower Moors, and also seen over, Porth Hellick, the Golf Course and over Vane Hill, Tresco.

Marsh Harrier – 1 flew from Longstone towards Parting Carn and what was presumed to be the same bird was later seen on Tresco.

Golden Oriole – 2 in Carreg Dhu . 1 on Samson hill, Bryher and 1 on St. Martin’s.

Pink-footed Goose – 2 still on the flood by St. Nicholas’ Church, Tresco.

Great Northern Diver – 3 in the Samson Flats area.

Hobby – The first report of the year was 1 hunting over Longstone and it or another on Tresco.

Merlin – 1 fighting with the Hobby on Tresco and 2 on St. Mary’s.

Common Buzzard – 1 was seen mobbing a Red Kite over Porth Hellick House.

Wood Sandpiper – 1 on Bryher.

Common Sandpiper – 1 at Porth Killier, St. Agnes.

Black-tailed Godwit – 1 on Bryher.

Bar-tailed Godwit – 1 on Samson.

Whimbrel – 30+ flew over St. Agnes Pool, 30 on Samson, 10 flew north over Porth Hellick House and 2 Stony Island.

Common Swift – 2 flew north along Sandy Lane, 1 over Higher Moors and 1 on Bryher.

Cuckoo – 1 calling in the pines north of Trenoweth and 1 calling on Gugh.

Firecrest – 1 in Carreg Dhu Gardens.

Siberian Chiffchaff – 1 still by Shooters’ Pool, Lower Moors.

Lesser Whitethroat – 1 ringed at Porth Hellick Ringing Station and 1 in St. Warna’s Cove, St. Agnes.

Common Whitethroat – 1 on Bryher.

Reed Warbler – 1 ringed at Porth Hellick Ringing Station.

Sedge Warbler – 1 singing in a garden on the Garrison and 3 ringed at Porth Hellick Ringing Station.

Grasshopper Warbler – 1 reeling near the Woolpack accommodation block.

Ring Ouzel – 1 on the western side of Peninnis, a female at Salakee and a male at Bryher Campsite.

Common Redstart – 1 on the Golf Course.

Black Redstart – 1 on the Golf Course, 1 on Bryher and 1 on St. Agnes.

Whinchat – 1 in the horse paddocks east of the football field on the Garrison.

Spotted Flycatcher – 1 in the Dead Pine Walk on the Garrison.

Pied Flycatcher – A female at Content and 1 on Bryher.

Yellow Wagtail – 4 on Tresco cricket pitch.

Tree Pipit – 1 on Bryher.
