More non-bird headlines 2 more GREEN DARNERS, both on St, Agnes, constituting the 5th & 6th for Scilly and the 8th & 9th for Britain. Also seen was an AMERICAN PAINTED LADY at Content (the 4th for Scilly) and 2 more MIGRATORY LOCUSTS in field s below the airport, an amazing mixture of American and African species.
The bird news was just as exciting:
RED-FOOTED BOOBY – After not been seen since 11th October much to the delight of the visiting birders, it was back on the Bishop Rock Lighthouse (photo). It was first seen on 7thAugust, which takes it stay in Scilly waters to 76 days!
Bonaparte’s Gull – A juvenile/1st winter bird was seen at Morning Point but could not be relocated.
Red-throated Pipit – 1 was briefly at Porthloo before flying off.
Rose-coloured Starling – 1 was by Hell Bay Hotel, Bryher.
Green-winged Teal – 2 putative “female types” on Lower Moors Pool.
Cory’s Shearwater – c300 were seen on the “Booby trip.
Great Shearwater – c35 were seen on the “Booby trip”.
Sooty Shearwater – 11 were seen on the “Booby trip”.
Balearic Shearwater – 1 was seen on the “Booby trip”.
Manx shearwater – 4 were seen on the “Booby trip”.
Great Skua – 1 was seen on the “Booby trip”.
Glossy Ibis – 1 still in the plastic covered field between Carreg Dhu and Parting Carn
Cattle Egret – 3 with cattle on Pool Road in the field opposite the David hunt Hide, Tresco.
Spoonbill – 3 on Green Island and 1 flew west past Lower Town, St. Martin’s.
Bullfinch – A female flew over Wingletang. This is a rare bird on Scilly.
Barred Warbler – 1 in the scrub at the top of the hill above Bryher Church.
Common Rosefinch – 1 flew over the airfield.
Little Bunting – 2 in a field at Troy Town, Farm, St. Agnes.
Great Spotted Woodpecker – 1 flew from Bryher to Tresco.
Short-eared Owl – 1 on St. Helen’s and later seen over Rushy Bay, Bryher.
Long-eared Owl – 1 in Appletree Glade, Bryher.
Osprey – 1 flew from Samson towards Annet.
Merlin –1 or 2 over several locations on St.Mary’s
Common Buzzard – 1 circling the airfield and also seen over Holy Vale & Sandy Lane.
Shoveler – A drake on Abbey Pool and a female on the Great Pool, Tresco
Wigeon – A female on the Great Pool, Tresco.
Tufted Duck – 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco.
Pochard – 3 on the Great Pool, Tresco.
Golden Plover – 5 in the heather near Deep Point.
Jack Snipe –1 at the junction of Normandy and the road to Deep Point (photo).
Woodcock – 1 Lower Moors.
Curlew Sandpiper –1 on Great Porth, Bryher.
Purple Sandpiper – 1 Porth Cressa.
Ruff – 1 flew high over Hugh Town.
Bar-tailed Godwit – 1 Periglis Beach, St. Agnes.
Black-tailed Godwit – 1 on the Great Pool, Tresco.
Whimbrel – 1 Porth Seal, St. Martin’s.
Firecrest – 1 near Shooters’ Pool, 1 on Sandy Lane, 2 on Rocky Hill, 2 in Carreg Dhu Gardens, 1 Holy Vale, 1 by the road at Higher Moors, 1 at Porth Hellick House and 1 one near the road to Abbey Gardens, Tresco.
Cetti’s Warbler – 2 at Porth Hellick.
Yellow-browed Warbler – 1 in the pines behind the pavilion on the Garrison on, 1 by the road at Higher Moors, 1 Pool Road, Tresco, 1 behind Pool Green, St. Martin’s and 1 on the track north of Bryner campsite.
Siberian Chiffchaff – 2 in Lower Moors.
Lesser Whitethroat – 1 in Star Castle grounds.
Common Whitethroat – 1 on Bryher.
Fieldfare – 60 Lower Moors, 20 Trenoweth and 50 on St. Martin’s.
Redwing – 15 on Bryher
Ring Ouzel – 1 at Borough Farm, St. Mary’s 1 on the rock beyond St. Agnes campsite and 1 on the Pernagie coastal path, St. Martin’s.
Black Redstart – 9 on St. Mary’s and 1 on Bryher
Whinchat – 1 on Bryher.
Spotted Flycatcher – 1 behind St. Martin’s cricket pitch.
Tree Pipit – 1 in the elms behind St. Martin’s cricket pitch.
Yellow Wagtail – 1 by the road at Higher Moors and 1 in a field on Pool Road, Tresco.
Siskin – Still plenty around the islands.
Snow Bunting – 1 on Bryher.
Reed Bunting – 1 behind Pool Green, St. Martin’s.
Short-beaked Common Dolphin – c50 were seen on the “Booby trip.

Lapland Bunting – 1 on the top of the Peninnis Farm Trail.

Spotted Flycatcher –1 still in the Dead Pine Walk on the Garrison.
Blue-headed Wagtail – 2 probable, 1 near the Big Pool, St. Agnes and 1 on the waterlogged field behind Tresco School.
Yellow Wagtail – 2 on St. Agnes.
Grey Wagtail – 1 in the waterlogged field behind Tresco School.
Lesser Redpoll – 3 with Siskins on Longstone Lane.
Brambling –1 flew over the Steval, on the Garrison, 3 in the Chaffinch flock on Peninnis Farm Trail and 3 on St. Agnes.
Reed Bunting –1 seen from the IOSBG hide in Lower Moors.
Tuesday (24/10)
The American insects continue to turn up. Today another American Painted Lady (photo) and a GREEN DARNER, this time a male (photo), both were found in fields along Sandy Lane, St. Mary’s. This is the 5th record for Scilly of the American butterfly (2 this autumn) and the 4th Scilly record this autumn of the dragonfly. There are now 10 British records of Green Darner and 7 of them have been on Scilly.
Olive-backed Pipit – 1 in Longstone Cottage Garden.
Red-throated Pipit – 1 flew over Ho.rse Point, St. Agnes.
Dusky Warbler – 1 at the top of Cove Vean, St. Agnes.
Rustic Bunting –1 in a cattle field between St. Warna’s Cove and Wingletang Down, St, Agnes.
Snow Bunting – 2 on the track by Woolpack Battery, Garrison.
Little Bunting – 1 flew from the top of the Peninnis Trail, 1 on Pungies Lane, 4 in a field south of Troy Town Farm, St. Agnes and 1 on the benches in front of Bryher Shop.
Red-breasted Flycatcher –1 at the bottom of Peninnis Farm Trail.
Cory’s Shearwater – 180 on the last pelagic trip of the year and 120 past Peninnis between 08:10 – 09:10.
Great Shearwater – 45 on the pelagic trip.
Sooty Shearwater – 22 on the pelagic trip and 9 past Peninnis between 08:10 – 09:10.
Manx Shearwater – 2 on the pelagic trip and 20past Peninnis between 08:10 – 09:10.
Yellow-legged Gull – 3 on the pelagic trip.
Kittiwake – 42 on the pelagic trip and 20 past Peninnis between 08:10 – 09:10.

Merlin – 1 or 2 around St, Mary’s, 1 on Tresco and 1 over Tinker’s Hill, St. Martin’s.
