An improvement in the weather meant birds were easier to find and more people were looking. A Little Bunting was in a weedy field below Bay View Terrace, opposite Porth Mellon industrial estate, a Richard’s Pipit flew over Peninnis and a Waxwing ( a Scilly scarcity) flew over the Strand. 3 dark-bellied Brent Geese ( the first of the month) were near Skirt Island, Tresco, a Pink-footed Goose was on Tresco and 4 Whooper Swan ( 2 adults & 2 juveniles) were seen in various combinations around the islands. The female Wigeon was still on Shooters’ Pool, a pair of Pintail were on Tresco, 10 Common Scoter were near Stony Island, Samson & 3 were in the Roads 2 Great Northern Diver were off Samson & 1 was of Periglis, St. Agnes and 4 Spoonbill were in Tresco Channel. The ring-tailed Hen Harrier was still on Bryher & new in was a Marsh Harrier on St. Agnes, 9 Golden Plover were on the airfield, a Whimbrel was at Bar Point, a Knot was on Town Beach, Woodcock continued to arrive with 7 on St. Mary’s, 2 on Tresco & 2 on St. Agnes, a Jack Snipe was on Peninnis and a minimum of 12 Lapwing were on the islands with counts 1, 5,5, 5, 7 & 12 been reported from various locations. 9 Kittiwake were near the Western Rocks and 2 Merlin were on Salakee Down, 1 was on the Garrison, 1 was at Lower Moors & 1 was on St. Agnes. 11 Skylark were at Porth Hellick,2 late Swallow flew past Porthcressa, 2 Willow Warbler were on Tresco & 1 was on St. Agnes, 5 Yellow-browed Warbler were on St. Mary’s, 1 was Tresco & 1 was on Bryher, a Lesser Whitethroat was at Little Porth and 5Firecrest were on St. Mary’s with another 2 on St.Agnes. Ring Ouzel were at Steval on the Garrison, Mount Flagon/Porthloo Lane and near King Charles’ Castle, Tresco, there were still good numbers of winter thrushes on the islands with counts of 50+ of both Fieldfare & Redwing and 12 Black Redstart were on the Garrison, 10 were at Porthcressa,2 were at New Grimsby, Tresco & 1 was on Bryher. 2 White Wagtail were at Pelistry Riding Stables, 2 Brambling were in Lower Moors & 2+ were on the Garrison and 2 Siskin were at Longstone.
