St. Mary’s – A Melodious Warbler showed well in the evening in the pines by the summerhouse at Longstone café. A Lapwing, a Dunlin, a Green Sandpiper, a Common Sandpiper, 9 Greenshanks and 25 Ringed Plovers were at Porth Hellick. 3 Northern Wheatear were on Peninnis.
Tresco – A Little Grebe, a female Pintail, 14 Grey Herons, 10 Little Egrets, 12 Greenshanks, 5 Redshanks and a Common Swift.
St. Agnes – 29 Cory’s shearwaters flew past the island between 09:30 and 10:00.
At sea – 4 Cory’s and 4 Sooty Shearwaters were seen from the Scillonian III on the crossing from Penzance to St. Mary’s. The short-range evening pelagic trip returned to more normal (and countable!) numbers. Bird seen were: a Wilson’s Storm Petrel (the 80th seen this summer from M.V Sapphire), 10 European Storm-petrels, 16 Cory’s Shearwaters and 9 Great Shearwaters. Also seen were 4 Great Skuas, one of which attacked and drowned a juvenile Lesser Black-backed Gull, before sitting on the sea and plucking the gull’s breast feathers prior to eating it. Nature red in tooth and claw! Seen in the sea were an Ocean Sunfish, a Minke Whale, 3 Blue Sharks were caught, tagged and released.
